History

In 2009, Jodie Underhill traveled to India to volunteer for the Tibetan cause. Appalled by the garbage situation in India, she started organising mass clean ups, which finally led to the organisation being formed in April 2009.[2]

Mission

To provide and promote sustainable waste management systems across India and subsequently improve and maintain public spaces. To provide environmental education and recycling programs in schools and communities and consequently encourage civic pride. To promote, sell and use environmentally friendly and recycled products.[3]

Areas of work

Mountain Cleaners predominantly engages in waste collection, waste segregation and management. They organise clean up hikes along well known trails and pilgrimage paths. Apart from mass clean ups, Mountain Cleaners also organises educational programs in schools and other communities to educate people about the process of waste management and the benefits of the same.
